At the annual investor conference, Disney Animation's Ed Catmull provided details on some of the upcoming films from both Pixar and Disney. Toy Story 3, American Dog, The Frog Princess were discussed, as well as a response to the rumor that Disney (WDFA) would only produce 2D movies.
Toy Story 3 was confirmed to be on track for 2009 and will be directed by Lee Unknrich (Co-director on TS2, Monsters, Inc., and Finding Nemo). John Lasseter is presumably too busy as CCO of Disney Animation to return as director of the TS franchise. Michael Arndt, the writer of Little Miss Sunshine will put together the script. Story artist Chris Williams will now direct American Dog after the removal of Chris Sanders. Sanders was not only the director of this film, but also the creator. He has since left Disney after the demotion. Ed Catmull squashed the rumors of WDFA going striclty 2D. He did confirm that the Mouse will produce hand drawn films, but CG will remain part of the pipeline. Traditionally animated The Frog Princess is believed to be the release after the CG American Dog. Catmull said that Pixar and Disney will be sharing notes and technology between the divisions as time goes on. He also said that Disney films were going to be more director driven and mentioned that although Disney has very talented artists, they were not bonded together in the right way. "The whole wasn't greater than the sum of its parts, but there were some great parts there".
