After nearly 50 years, Disney is getting back in the business of creating short films. The first will be Goofy cartoon that will be completed next year. Although the mouse has created a few short films over the last few years, those have been more the result of "artistic exercise" rather than a commercial endeavor. The new projects are an effort by the Pixar leadership to put the Los Angeles unit back to the form it pioneered.
This is a result of John Lasseter trying to do for the modern Disney what shorts did for Pixar and for what it did for Walt's original group back in the early years. Don Hahn, Disney Producer, says that the new shorts would be screened in theaters with Disney films. The new shorts will be created in 2D animation, 3D animation, or a combination of the two. Four new shorts are currently in development or production at Disney. Those include The Ballad of Nessie, Golgo's Guest, Prep and Landing, and Goofy's "How To Install a Home Theater". The Goofy short is set to go into production early 2007.
