Disney Faces a New Round of Layoffs E-mail
Tuesday, 10 October 2006

Creatives over at Disney Feature are saying that another round of layoffs are expected as soon as Meet The Robinson's has wrapped.  The crew will be evaluated and a selection of them will move over to American Dog, those that don't make the cut will have 60 days before being laid off.  This has become commonplace in the CG business and is something we are seeing time and time again at studios everywhere.  "With salaries so high, it is just too expensive to keep people around when we don't have a show for them to work on," an anonymous Disney producer told CGCHAR.  An artist named Jason commented, "I'm not sure whether I'll stay or go, at least we get two months to find work before being thrown to the streets.  Not that I'm happy about it or anything.  I guess Pixar can't fix everything."

Dang that sucks. I myself am pretty tired of contractor work, getting laid off every year so far since i've been in the industry. There doesn't seem to be any other option though that i can see, but i love working on films and cinematics so i guess i have to take it for the time being. sucks.

Yeah, this industry is no bed of roses (unless it's the thorny kind of roses). Should have tried to be a professional Foosball player instead.

:-D I think that's what every animator aspires to Aaron, everyone at our studio anyway.

I guess since artists seem to be an "expensive" expendable, studios will only bring us on when needed, or maybe they could actually pay their studio execs a wage which isn't so excessive.
