Outsider's View of Animation E-mail

While writing the screenplay for his animated film The Ant Bully, John Davis gave one of the ant colony characters a speech about collectivism. "I stopped and thought, oh my gosh, she's a Communist!" said Davis, laughing, having a Dalton Trumbo moment. "But of course that's how ants are. They're communal. The individual is not as important as the group, and each ant serves the colony."

Davis was hired by Tom Hanks to adapt the story from an old picture book about a boy who learns about ant society firsthand when he's reduced by magic to the size of an insect. "I was really thinking of the story in terms of self-sacrifice and cooperation, but I understand why we got some strange reactions at some preview screenings. A couple of the cards came back complaining about our Communist agenda. This was a shock to me, because I'm very apolitical."
