Pixels Pooping Out? E-mail
Monday, 24 July 2006

Ever since Pixar burst on the scene with a certain group of toys lead by a hyper cowboy named Woody and an all-business space ranger named Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story, audiences have seemingly been enamored with computer generated animation.

Pixar enjoyed an amazing win streak with Toy Story and its sequel, A Bugs Life, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo and The Incredibles.  They faced stiff competition from DreamWorks who have been riding the shoulders of an ogre named Shrek in two films followed by Shark Tale and, more recently, Over the Hedge.  Even 20th Century Fox got into the act with two Ice Age movies.

The rest of the story can be read here.

Somewhat misleading headline (and article) since the writer goes on to suggest that the reason is weak story, and not necessarily audiences being bored with CGI. That should be a given, but maybe it's not. Personally, I cringe everytime I see a trailer that does little more than tell me what celebrities are doing the voices for an animated film.

I honestly think some people are just looking for reasons to put the hate on CG animation. There has been a lot of anger from some that feel it has been the cause of traditional animation to fall by the wayside.

Saturation may be happening in CG films. But even so, that hasn't been the downful of live action. Either has been the dozens of live action flops that happen every year.

I just think a lot of people are looking for anything to rip on CG.

Well with so many movies released so close together, I can see why the general public might regard the crop of recent CG features with little more than a shrug. I mean, when's the last time we saw this many traditionally animated features come out this close together over here? I think once the powers that be get it out of their system that this is "some fad" or quick way to make family friendly money, I think it'll give the artists a bit more breathing room to actually do good movies.
