-what is the working relationship between the director and the animator?  how much freedom does the animator have to explore?  i ask this because on the large scale, the director might know the character better than the animator.  but on the small scale, the animator might have some insight as well into how that character would react in a scene.

Keep em coming!

You just about answered your own question.  At the end of the series, I was pitching directly to the animators.  This was done mainly for speed sake so the animators could hear exactly what I wanted on most shots.

What you said is right, though.  The director should have the big picture, especially the emotion of the character.  But the animator will get the little nuances of the character.  That to me is the fun part.

-at a smaller studio, how common is it for an animator to have a role as a character designer or storyboard artist?  i know some of the bigger studios have entire departments and cross-over is a little less common, but is it the same at dna?  or am i completely wrong?

Very common here.  We have a couple of animators who are killer character designers and concept people.  We kinda encourage it actually.  That allows people to explore things.  It also allows them to grow.  I would say it is most common with design and not so much storyboarding though.  A bunch of our story guys can go into layout or workbook too.  Texture artists or modelers may go into lighting as well.

Hey Mike,

I was wondering if you guys at DNA check out the 10 second club website? http://www.10secondclub.net/
It's a monthly character animation competition. They have a winner every month on their front page.
I know it's a very good way to hone your character animation skills. But can something like that promote you as an animator?
Can it make you noticed by animation houses like DNA?

Thanks!

Hi,
I was wondering if you had any tips for people younger than 18 (in highschool) who are interested in animation. How would one in that age group be able to convince a studio to allow him to come in and see how things work? Also do you have any tips on timing in animation?

Thanks,
Avi

This concludes the question portion of this weeks Ask The Pro.  Although no one can post more questions, Mike can continue to answer questions if there any left he would like to address.

Thanks a bunch for your time Mike, we appreciate you stepping in and giving us some of your time.
