Pixar Animation Studios is best known for its hit movies--six in a row, starting with 1995's Toy Story, with the chance of a seventh arriving this month with Cars. Yet behind Pixar's critical and commercial success--Walt Disney announced in January that it would acquire Pixar for $7.4 billion in stock--lies the little-known tale of a cash-strapped start-up that endured nine years of losses and failed strategies. Most people associate Pixar with Apple Computer icon Steve Jobs, Pixar's majority shareholder. But two computer graphics researchers, Edwin Catmull and Alvy Ray Smith, laid the company's groundwork. And while Pixar's products were always top of the line, the market wasn't always ready for them. "It wasn't really working," says Smith. "In fact, that's being gentle. We should have failed."

When asked if I would write a short article for the newly refurbished CGCHAR, I quickly responded with how honored I was and that I’d get right on it. Okay, not really. In all honesty, I really didn’t have time, but because it’s hard for me to say “no” -- here I am! The Year of the Toon! I hereby proclaim that 2006 is the year of the animated feature toon. It is only mid June and we have already seen Cars, Over The Hedge, Ice Age 2, Doogal, and The Wild. Okay, who are we kidding? No one really saw Doogal or The Wild. Nonetheless, they were released and help make up this mega year of toons.

The Contra Costa Times recently published an opinion piece on computer animated featuers. The story starts off with slap across Pixar's face. Something strange happens while you're watching Pixar's new computer-animated feature "Cars": A distinct sense of boredom settles in. For the first time ever with one of the famed studio's films, you can't shake the feeling that you've seen all of this a million times before.
