Poor 10-year-old Lucas Nickle (voiced by ZACH TYLER EISEN) can't get a break. Recently moved to a new city with his family, he hasn't made a single friend. He gets nothing but grief from his teenage sister Tiffany and not a whole lot of attention lately from his parents (voiced by CHERI OTERI and LARRY MILLER), who are busy planning their big anniversary weekend trip to Puerto Vallarta. Meanwhile, his loving but kinda kooky grandmother Mommo (voiced by LILY TOMLIN) spends all her time trying to protect the family from those outer-space aliens she's been reading about in the grocery store magazines...

CGCHAR continues to promote film festivals that award cash prizes in the short film category. This time around we want to mention the Raindance Film Festival in the UK.
Along with the related British Independent Film Awards, Raindance helps to promote original filmmaking through diverse international programming. This year's prizes include the Diesel Film of the Festival award. The winner receives funds from Diesel to make the following year's Raindance film festival trailer, which is screened in cinemas all over the UK. Also up for grabs are the Distribution Award, where the winner receives UK theatrical and DVD distribution, and the Nokia Award, where the winner receives £5,000 ($9,000 USD) to make a short film. Laika, which was known as Vinton Studios when Knight acquired it, employs fewer than 200 people now, but expects to hire another 400 in the next two years as it produces a pair of theatrical features, The Oregonian reported in its Wednesday editions. In an interview with the newspaper, Knight said he wants Laika to compete with Pixar Animation Studios, the company behind hit films such as "Toy Story" and "Cars."

It's tempting to see "Cars," the seventh movie from Pixar Animation Studios, as a parable about the future of Walt Disney Co.
Early in the film, which opened Friday, a cocky race car named Lightning McQueen declares, "I'm a one-man show." But by the time the credits roll, McQueen realizes he's nothing without a great pit crew behind him. It's a lesson that Ed Catmull, Pixar's co-founder and the new president of Disney Feature Animation, has built his career on.
