Side Effects software recently announced their plans for this year’s SIGGRAPH in Boston. Artists from the industry’s top visual effects houses will be showcasing their work from summer blockbusters like Superman Returns and The Ant Bully. To add to the festivities, an authentic pub night will also be taking place on Tuesday, August 1.

 I had a chance to bust out of LA and head to San Diego for a couple of Comic-Con days. There were several trip highlights, however, only a few of them are interesting enough to write about. To start things off, I’ll quickly go over the Sony Animation panel that included clips and discussion for Open Season and Surf’s Up.

Moviephone has provided a behind-the-scenes featurette for the upcoming CG feature - Open Season from SPA. In the tranquil mountain town of Timberline, Boog, (Martin Lawrence), a grizzly bear with no survival skills, enjoys an idyllic existence. He spends his days as the star of the town's nature show and his nights living a life of luxury in the garage of Park Ranger Beth (Debra Messing), who raised him since he was a cub. Every town has a bully and Timberline's is the paranoid über-hunter Shaw (Gary Sinise). Shaw believes that animals are conspiring against humans, "So we have to get them before they get us!" When he drives into town with Elliot, (Ashton Kutcher), a scrawny, fast-talking wild mule deer strapped to the hood of his truck, Boog is moved by Elliot's pleas for help and against his better judgment, frees him. Elliot follows Boog home, intent on returning the favor by "freeing" Boog from his garage "captivity." He introduces the bear to a world of sweet temptations he has never known. But when the bear's true instincts being to emerge, events quickly spin out of control.

Over on Apple's website, you can view the new teaser trailer for the upcoming TMNT CG feature. The film is being created overseas at Imagi and releases on 3/30/07. The Warner Brothers picture will be distributed by The Weinstein Company. You can review this teaser trailer in the You-Review section of CGCHAR.

Aiming to expand its global reach, Rainmaker Income Fund is acquiring Mainframe Entertainment Inc., in a $14-million deal that will make Rainmaker the largest animation and visual effects studio in Canada. Rainmaker is best known for providing visual effects to high profile movie projects such as the The Da Vinci Code and Blades of Glory, which is still in production. But the company thinks it can expand its clout by acquiring Mainframe, a company known for launching Reboot, the world's first made-for-television series consisting of nothing but computer generated animation.
